North Carolina Car Title Notarization
Yes. North Carolina requires the seller's signature on the title assignment to be notarized, and the buyer's name must be filled in. Open titles aren't allowed (N.C.G.S. §20-72; NCDMV title & registration).
Steps
- Fill in the buyer, price and odometer.
- The seller signs in front of a notary. Many NCDMV license plate agencies and banks have notaries.
- The buyer applies for title and registration with NCDMV.
Online?
North Carolina's own remote notarization isn't operational yet (USA Notary, 2026). In-person is the reliable route for NC titles.
