The fee cap
California Government Code §8211 caps the fee at $15 per signature taken for an acknowledgment, and $15 for administering an oath or affirmation with a jurat (Cal. Gov. Code 8211). The National Notary Association reports AB 1597 raises this to $20 effective January 1, 2027 (NNA). A notary may charge less. Mobile notaries may add a separate travel fee, so ask upfront.
Online notarization in California
California has enacted RON but it isn't operational yet, so California notaries can't perform online notarizations today (USA Notary, 2026). Californians can often use a notary commissioned in another state online, but confirm that whoever receives the document accepts it.
In person vs online
