The short version

A virtual mailbox gives you a real street address, scans the outside of each letter, and forwards mail to wherever you are parked. For full-timers the choice comes down to how much mail you open and how often you forward.

Mailbox vs. domicile: not the same thing

A virtual mailbox is a mailing address. Your legal domicile (driver's license, vehicle registration, voting, taxes) is a separate decision made under your state's rules, and many states won't accept a commercial mailbox (CMRA) address as a residence. Check your DMV's residency rules before using a mailbox address on a license application.

Setting it up from the road

  1. Pick a provider and address.
  2. Complete USPS Form 1583 and verify two IDs. Since 2024 you can verify through the provider's process or a notary, including online. See PS-1583 for RVers and nomads.
  3. Forward mail to campgrounds, a friend, or a pickup location. Call ahead: not every campground accepts packages.
